The Youngman's Map
THE YOUNG MAN’S MAP
By Jeremy Leariwala.
Young and Human:
Apparently there exists a
common quote that Einstein predicted “a time when the world would be occupied
by a generation of idiots!” I can’t confirm the authenticity of that quote
though. Human actions would be controlled by electronic technology during that
time. Decision making, social interactions and communication would entirely
depend on electronic technology. Seeing young people glued to the social media
applications, mobile phones browsing, video gaming or online betting might make
someone fear that the idiots’ generation is setting up camp already today.
Being
human is a very special thing. First of all no one was ever conceived for no
reason! Accidents occur because something didn’t go as it should. Being human
means one has a brain to decide what to do today and what to do tomorrow no
matter the situation. This also means being able to think, chose what is
beneficial to oneself from the various opportunities presented by the world. A
young person who can see opportunities, plan, work hard and stick to his plans
is not an idiot. He can keep hope alive and idiots can’t do that.
New order:
The quest to stay alive and economically
put scarce resources into use has led to the invention of fast and efficient
communication systems. The pace at which globalization is redefining culture
makes today’s young person someone special. In the yester years culture had one
common thing: if you wanted to eat, it was a must that work first. Today
Money-power and materialism occupies the minds of a good number of the youths.
Unemployment is a big problem because everyone wants to work smart and not hard
to get paid handsomely at the end. Getting all the money today takes priority.
To many of them, God makes sense to the readers and believers of religious
literature. With our electronic devices and machines we can work smart and
achieve a lot, but this also requires that something else or someone else must
do the hard work.
The mind set:
The character of a young man
is defined by the mind set he maintains. What are his desires in life? What
principles guide his acts in life? Does he have talents, and if yes is he aware
of his abilities? Can he think of how to reap benefits from applying his
talents in what he sets out to do? Can he put his desires in a 5 year plan to
achieve them?
Teachings and morals:
Our parents and the schools
we go to guide us in what kind of decisions we make in life. This is because
they form part of our experiences. A young man who joins a group of misguided
peer pals ends up with the wrong morals if he is not careful. Today’s media and
some of the literature that is readily available is of questionable stuff. The
number of crooked role models has increased, exposing the young man to more
highways to harmful character than otherwise.
Above
all, it is upon a young man to sieve through the information he gets, draw up
his map and be part of the key navigators in it. He should decide where he
wants to be in the future, how to reach it using the existing technology and
stick to his plans. Knowing where to be enables a young man to know what to
demand from the existing political systems or what technology to accept to keep
his life on course. Drawing up a map will enable a young man see the treasures
that are hidden from the eyes of an idiot.
