Whip Not

WHIP NOT

Jeremy Leariwala

One fine morning I was awoken by screams of some high school students from a nearby school. I had no idea what they were screaming about but from a few words I could gather, I knew that the school principal was in trouble. I later came to learn that there were more troubles than I had guessed. The principal, the area chief, the local area police boss and parents were in deep trouble. And I was even more troubled because I could not believe what actually transpired that morning was a true reflection of the school’s products.
The incident of that morning has been disturbing my mind because I have always believed that whatever your students do today, to some extent, determines what they would do in the future. Have you ever met a hawker selling whips and felt your skin cringe? Have you ever watched someone buying a whip and felt like testing the same whip on him? Maybe yes maybe not but let me give you my mind.
Those high school students did the most unthinkable thing that has forced me to zero in on a brief list of individuals you should never think of whipping.
A parent tops the list. Be it the father or the mother, no matter how wrong they are, don’t ever attempt to whip them. If you ever dare beat any of your parents, I don’t know how much repentance you would need to be forgiven. Please don’t do it. You can be smart and bypass their marks academically, but never forget they remain your parents forever.
Secondly a school principal and his/her teachers are a big NO! These people form part of the team sent by God to impart knowledge into your mind. Whipping them makes you the teacher! The only teacher that can make you realize your mistakes once you whip them might be the world itself. No one whips his teacher and expect to be respected, followed or have an easy life out of school. Smart students accord their teachers respect and pay attention to their words.
A government officer on official duty is my third big NO! Now if one day you see your villagers chasing the area chief around the village in broad daylight, know that there is a big problem somewhere. When you see your area policeman being caned on the streets by the same people he is supposed to be protecting, you better be worried. Whipping a government officer is equal to whipping the government itself! It is disrespectful, barbaric and unacceptable. I am still disturbed that high school students can have the courage to poke their area police boss in the face. What happened to the respect people gave the authority of the day?
The fourth guy here is the man of God. That person preaching to remind you that there is a super natural being greater than anything else called God. The God that gave us life, air, the world and a powerful mind all for free. Please don’t ever think of whipping that guy for fun. If his sermons irritate you, tell him to go elsewhere and should you think he is a criminal, report him to the authorities.
Now; before you form an opinion on anyone I haven’t mentioned above always remember this saying: ‘Even the mad man you see at the market place has his people’. Think twice before using that whip on anyone lest both the written and natural law catches up with you. The high school students I mentioned earlier scared me with their actions. They tied their principal and carried him like a sack of charcoal for about a kilometer. The area chief who tried to intervene was humiliated before the police boss arrived to receive his share of harassment. Only then did the future leaders got a taste of what discipline out of school meant. Enough tear gas was used in the ensuing melee and by midday the school was closed indefinitely. Authority and power deserves respect and dignity from subjects that expect just and fair treatment from it now or in the future.
